We have quite a few competitions of various sorts this year. Most are for club members only. Those that beginner's can join in with say this:
Monthly - best gold. There will be no warning as to when this will be done. The club captain will suddenly tell everyone to leave all gold arrows in the target. The arrow closest to the center of the target will win the archer a medal.
Monthly over the summer - At the end of a Sunday shoot we will have a simple knock-out contest. The winner will receive chocolate. This will be open to beginners.
Midsummer and Easter Tournaments - At the committee meeting on 7 February a new trophy was proposed and accepted, the Andy Friend Challenge Trophy, in honour of the work Andy has done for both clubs. As we wanted him to be able to present the trophy to the first ever winner, it was decided that for this year only, the Tournament would be moved forward took place on Sunday 13 April.
The Easter competition should have taken place on 23 March. However, due to bad weather we had to cancel. As there was only three weeks between the two anyway, we decided to double up both competitions. Despite dire weather forecasts, 13 April proved to be a lovely day for shooting, warm and, for the most part, sunny.

The good people of Coastal Archers have thrown down the gauntlet in the name of charity.
Are we up for the jelly bow challenge? Can we gather together 10 good people and true? Are we prepared to defend our honour in this exacting tourney? For God and for valour, for the children of Wraxall hospice and the crack of a good night out?
And what, you may ask, is a jelly bow. It's a beginner's one piece fibreglass affair with a draw weight of between 15 and 20 lbs and yes, we will be shooting a National with them, so it will be more like a clout shoot. If you want to know more, see the Autumn 2007 Archery UK page 29.
The jelly bow challenge has it's own unique rules. Rule 7 'Cheating is allowed'. Apparently last year this included, but was not limited to, sabotaging/hiding the opponents bows, scoring 10s for 9s and not having a single miss all night. Rules change during the course of the evening and although the rules say how the winners will be decided, that was last year, this year it may be different and we may not know until the very end of the tourney itself.
Why were we challenged? Apparently Andy and Sheena met the organisers at the Exmouth Lunatic shoot when they were dressed as a tiger and penguin respectively and in subsequent emails, Coastal Archers decided we had the right sense of humour.
And that last clause just about says it all as to the level of the evening.
To see the challenge itself:
As a decided twist on last year, the winner was the team with the greatest number of whites and was won by Wellington Bowmen. For more on our individual exploits see the news page (scroll down to June). There are also reports in the Weston and Somerset Mercury and on the Burnham-on-Sea.com website. We also made it onto You Tube.

However, this year we switched the two over, so it was both decided upon and presented to the winner at the AGM. And the winner was - Pete Moore for all his hard work over the years as treasurer.

On 12 August Harry Francis entered his first competition. It was Bath Archers 50 Annual Hereford Tournament. Although Harry was the only one shooting in his group, he scored the highest of the three who shot the Bristol IV. He also set a new club record, one that was exactly as old as he is - it was set the day he was born. The results and a photo have also appeared in the Bath Chronicle.
24 September was the date for the annual championship. The weather was cool but pleasant enough.

The day finished with the customary presentation of medals and B-B-Q.
On the 9 June Sheena McCullagh and Andy Friend entered the Exmouth Archers overnight fancy dress Lunartic shoot. Sheena did better than she did in 2004. This time she was only next to last. However, she did win the fancy dress competition (see photo on the right). She swears blind that it was the feet that did it. Yes, they are a pair of washing up gloves.
18 September was the date for the club championship. Everyone shot a National round.
The results were:
Gent's recurve: 1 - Jim Denham; 2 - Mike Townsend; 3 - Steve Moseley; 4 - Pete Moore; 5 - Ian Lassman.
Gent's compound: 1 - Harvey Abrams.

In archery, consitancy is everything. So congratulations to Ian Lassman who managed to replicate his 2004 results in everyway, score, handicap adjusted score and placing.
Steve Moseley travelled to Italy to take part in an International shoot. He came first in his category. Well done Steve.
On Sunday 26 September we gathered for our club championship. The day was cool and overcast and got colder as it went on. By the time the awards were presented everyone was as close to the B-B-Q as possible. Not out of companionship, but in an attempt to keep warm. Still everyone enjoyed the day including Sheena McCullagh who tripped over in a rabbit hole just before the start and sprained her ankle. The gents on her target were very chivalrous both scoring for her and collecting her arrows.
The rounds shot were Short Nationals for the two younger age groups of the junior gents and the gents visually impaired. Everyone else shot a National.
The results were:
Gent's recurve: 1 - Paul Maines; 2 - Clive Wilkins; 3 - Jim Denham; 4 - Pete Moore; 5 - Ian Lassman.
Gent's longbow: 1 - Mark Thomas; 2 - John McCullagh.
Gent's recurve (head to head): 1 - Ben Huckvale; 2 - Paul Kobbe.

Ladies recurve: 1 - Sheena McCullagh.

Gent's under 18 compound: 1 - Chris Davies.

During the B-B-Q as special award was made to Chris Maines, known to all as Hot Dog because of his love of them. Chris had completed a beginner's course a short time before. He joined the club and the first three rounds he shot were all third class, the latter of which was also third class in the next age group up. He then had a birthday and changed age group. His next two rounds were also third class, meaning that within five rounds of having started shooting he obtained third class in two different age groups. That is some feat. His reward - a foot long hot dog which he ate with great relish, or was it tomato ketchup?
In Paris on June 5 Steve Moseley became the European Visually Impaired champion in in his category. Very well done.
On the 13 June Sheena and John McCullagh entered the Exmouth Archers fancy dress Lunartic shoot in full line dance rig. Unfortunately they did not do as well as Steve, coming last in their respective categories. However, John was shooting a compound bow and as no gent had ever shot it before, he set a group club record.
August saw Pete Moore competing in the combined Police and Fire Service World Championships in Sheffield. He come a very impressive fifth.

The trophies were awarded by the Lady Paramount Mavis Brown.

The day was rounded off with the traditional B-B-Q. Many thanks to Jim Denham, the chief cook and bottle washer. Thanks also to those members unable to shoot due to injury etc, who turned out with their families and helped to make this a thoroughly enjoyable day.
In April Steve Moseley became the British Blind Sports (BBS) national indoor champion, setting a new national record in the process. In June he became the BBS national outdoor champion, again setting a new national record. On 14 July 2003 he set yet another national record while competing in the Sussex County Championships. Remarkably, he was competing on level terms with sighted archers.
In August Pete Moore competed in the combined Police and Fire Service World Championships in Barcelona, coming sixth.
